Fabric Loader and Fabric API: what your server actually needs

Installing Fabric Loader does not install every library a mod needs. If Minecraft asks for Fabric API, check the mod requirements and the exact Minecraft version before downloading another file.

Loader, API and mods do different jobs

Fabric Loader loads compatible mods and checks their declared requirements. Fabric API is a separate mod that provides APIs used by many Fabric projects. Your gameplay mod may need both. Fabric API does not replace the loader, and installing the loader alone does not satisfy an API dependency.

Not every Fabric mod requires Fabric API. Read the selected release's dependencies rather than adding libraries because their names look familiar. See the Fabric Loader documentation and Fabric's installation guide.

Check these versions before installing

  1. Write down the server's Minecraft version and software. Paper and Purpur plugins are not Fabric mods.
  2. Choose a release marked for Fabric and that Minecraft version. A Forge or NeoForge file is not interchangeable.
  3. Read its required Fabric Loader version, Java requirement and dependency list.
  4. Select a compatible Fabric API release if the project requires it. Matching the mod's version number to the API's version number is not a compatibility test.
  5. Check whether each file belongs on the client, server or both. Follow the project's instructions for the specific release.

The Java requirement depends on the Minecraft and loader versions. An old forum answer recommending a particular Java release may not apply to your world. Consult the current Fabric Java instructions before changing a runtime.

Install a dependency through ChunkArc Manage

For the Fabric catalogue workflow, open the selected world's Plugins & mods section. Confirm the server software and Minecraft version first. Stop the world before changing server mods, then find the dependency in the catalogue and review the available compatible release.

Install only the dependencies the mod requires. A project appearing in search does not prove that it has a compatible build for your server. The installer includes required dependencies declared in the catalogue when it can verify them. Check the reviewed files and the author’s instructions for additional requirements and client-side dependencies. If the required release is unavailable, leave the installation pending and ask support with the project link and version.

Start the world and read the first useful error in the console. The complete ChunkArc mod installation guide explains the catalogue steps, backup precautions and client setup. This workflow does not promise arbitrary JAR uploads or one-click installation of a full modpack.

Read the requirement in the error

For example, a dependency error might identify a mod, the library it needs and a version range. This is an illustrative case, not a log from a tested ChunkArc installation. Match all three pieces of information to the selected release.

  • Missing Fabric API: verify that it is installed in the affected environment and supports that Minecraft version.
  • Incompatible version: choose a supported release of the mod or dependency. Renaming the file will not change its compatibility.
  • Client class on a dedicated server: check whether the project is client-only. Adding more libraries may not solve it.
  • Duplicate mod: inspect the installed list for old and new copies of the same project.

Do not edit a JAR's metadata to silence requirements or disable dependency checks as a routine fix. Fabric's mod metadata documentation explains that projects declare environments and dependencies.

Does every player need the same files?

Players need the required client-side files, not a blind copy of the server folder. A content mod often needs a matching client release; a server-only utility may not. A rendering or interface mod may belong only in the player's instance. Check each project's environment and dependencies.

Keep a shared list of Minecraft, loader and required mod releases for your group. In Prism Launcher, edit the correct instance before adding client mods. Its download mods guide describes the client workflow.

What to send support

Include the Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version, project links, selected releases and whether the failure happens on the server or your PC. Add the complete relevant startup log or crash report after removing tokens, passwords and personal details. A screenshot of the final “server stopped” line usually misses the cause.

If the world starts but a player cannot join, use the modded server troubleshooting guide. If you are choosing resources, read the Minecraft RAM guide; installing Fabric API does not make a heavy pack fit a smaller plan.
