A lightly configured Paper or Purpur world with a few friends can start small. Add memory only after the panel, console or profiler shows a real limit. Heavy modpacks need much more than a simple plugin server.
Practical starting points
These are planning ranges, not guarantees or current ChunkArc paid plans. A quiet five-player server can use less memory than a one-player world generating chunks with many mods.
What increases memory use?
- Loaded chunks: more players spread across the world keep more areas active.
- View and simulation distance: higher values keep more world data and entities active around each player.
- Plugins and mods: caches, maps, protection data, automation and new content all add different costs.
- World activity: farms, entities, redstone and rapid exploration can increase both memory and CPU pressure.
- Software version: modern versions and mod loaders can have different baselines and Java requirements.
What can ChunkArc's 1.5 GB Free Beta handle?
It is designed for a small test world, a few simultaneous friends and a light Paper or Purpur setup. Keep view distance sensible, avoid large pre-generated worlds and add plugins one at a time.
Fabric is available, but a large modpack is not a realistic 1.5 GB workload. Use a small, verified mod list and watch the first startup carefully. Folia does not reduce the basic memory required by the world and should not be chosen as a RAM fix.
How to recognize a memory problem
A high graph is not automatically a failure: Java deliberately uses available heap and later reclaims unused objects. Look for repeated out-of-memory messages, container termination, failed startup or severe garbage-collection pauses.
CPU or tick lag is a different problem. Adding RAM does not repair a slow plugin, excessive entity processing or overloaded chunk generation. Starting with Paper 1.21, the bundled spark profiler is the preferred PaperMC tool for investigating performance while the problem is happening.
Reduce memory pressure safely
- Use the right software. Paper is the normal baseline for a small plugin server.
- Lower view and simulation distance carefully. Change one setting, restart and test with players.
- Remove unused plugins or mods. Do not keep duplicate tools that solve the same problem.
- Control exploration. Rapid new-chunk generation creates memory, CPU and disk pressure at the same time.
- Measure before upgrading. Keep the console error or profiler report that proves the bottleneck.
